Admissions Method

The Approach

Selective applications are systems of evidence. The Ivy Sanctum reads the file at three levels: what the reader sees, how the pieces work together, and what interpretation the dossier carries into committee.

The methodology connects academic record, activities, honors, recommendations, essays, supplements, institutional fit, and contextual evidence into one coherent admissions argument.

Read the evidence. Architect the file. Position the candidate.

Read → Architect → Position
01

Read

Decompose the file into claims, receipts, witnesses, patterns, gaps, context, and institutional signals. Each component is read individually and in relation to the complete dossier.

02

Architect

Assign every component a defined burden of proof. Activities establish residue. Recommendations establish witness. Essays establish interpretation. Supplements establish placement and future direction.

03

Position

Shape the final interpretation of the candidate: the argument the reader remembers, the language a committee can repeat, and the evidence available to support that judgment.

Method 01

File Architecture

File Architecture treats the application as a coordinated dossier. Every section carries a defined function, every claim requires evidence, and every piece of evidence gains strength through deliberate placement.

F.01

The Common App File

Claim → Proof → Witness → Placement → Context

A file read begins by identifying the central claims the application asks a reader to carry forward. The method then traces the evidence supporting each claim, the people capable of confirming it, the location where that evidence carries greatest force, and the context required for accurate judgment.

Claim

The proposition the file establishes about the candidate: intellectual character, contribution, initiative, judgment, technical ability, artistic direction, or another governing pattern.

Proof

Observable evidence that gives the claim weight: artifacts, outcomes, sustained work, metrics, decisions, research, performances, publications, or institutional responsibility.

Witness

Credible third-party confirmation. A teacher, mentor, supervisor, principal investigator, coach, or institutional actor gives the committee an external point of verification.

Placement

The location in the application where a piece of evidence carries the clearest strategic function: activities, recommendations, personal writing, supplements, honors, or contextual information.

Context

The denominator that allows the reader to interpret the evidence accurately: access, selectivity, school environment, family circumstances, timeline, institutional constraints, or scale.

Method 02

Writing Overhaul

Writing Overhaul studies how interpretation moves through language. The work begins with the candidate's real material and develops a structure that carries observation, meaning, evidence, and direction with precision.

W.01

The Carry Sentence

Notice → Meaning → Response → Proof → Direction

Strong application writing creates an interpretation the reader can carry forward. The Carry Sentence method develops that interpretation by tracing a movement from observation through meaning and response into evidence and future direction.

Notice

The observation, tension, question, pattern, or detail that reveals how the student attends to the world.

Meaning

The student's interpretation of that observation and the intellectual, personal, or ethical significance attached to it.

Response

The decision, inquiry, creation, intervention, or repeated behavior generated by that interpretation.

Proof

The residue of the response: an artifact, changed system, result, body of work, relationship, contribution, or observable pattern.

Direction

The future vector revealed by the pattern: the questions, environments, disciplines, and forms of contribution the student is prepared to pursue next.

Supporting writing systems

Method 03

Private Counsel

Private Counsel extends the same methodology across time: academic choices, testing posture, school-list architecture, recommender strategy, application sequencing, file development, and response to new outcomes throughout the cycle.

C.01

Dossier Triangulation

Essay Claim → Activity Residue → Letter Witness → Supplement Placement → Context Protection

Dossier Triangulation tests whether the central interpretation of the candidate survives across the complete application. A strong file creates reinforcement across independent surfaces: personal writing introduces the claim, activities leave residue, recommendations witness the pattern, supplements place it inside the institution, and context protects the reader's interpretation.

Essay Claim

The interpretation the student's writing establishes about character, intellectual direction, motive, or contribution.

Activity Residue

Evidence that the pattern has produced visible work, responsibility, artifacts, outcomes, or sustained behavior.

Letter Witness

Independent confirmation from a credible observer who has seen the pattern operate in a meaningful environment.

Supplement Placement

Evidence that connects the candidate's established pattern to the courses, units, communities, methods, and opportunities available at the institution.

Context Protection

The information required to preserve an accurate reading of the file across school environment, access, timeline, opportunity, family circumstances, or institutional scale.

Supporting counsel systems

Weekly work on how selective files are read.

The Journal will extend the methodology through essays, case analysis, admissions reading, academic positioning, recommendation strategy, writing systems, institutional fit, and the mechanics of selective admission.

Each issue will begin on The Ivy Sanctum and feed a wider archive of research, methods, and applications of the work.

Research, advisory, and a growing body of work.

The Ivy Sanctum is an independent admissions research and advisory practice. Its methodology draws on more than 30 years of combined experience across Harvard's schools, including firsthand experience reading files on a Harvard graduate admissions committee.

The work develops through direct advisory engagements, frameworks, instruments, publications, and a growing repository of admissions methods.

Admissions is where the work begins.
